Baseball upsets No. 20 NMJC in regional

The Weatherford College baseball team upset top seed New Mexico Junior College 3-0 Friday in the first round of the Region V Tournament in Midland.

WC's Kade Bragg threw seven shutout innings and struck out nine NMJC batters to earn the win. Bristol Carson picked up a save with two shutout innings.

The Coyotes got on the scoreboard first with a Cade Merka home run in the top of the third inning. Merka went 2-for-4 with two RBI.

Weatherford put up two additional runs in the top of the ninth inning thanks to RBI singles from Chase Pendley and Merka to seal the win.

New Mexico, ranked No. 20 in the latest NJCAA Division I poll, is the top seed from the Western Junior College Athletic Conference. WC is the No. 4 seed from the Northern Texas Junior College Athletic Conference.

Weatherford (37-19) will play No. 19 Grayson College at 8 p.m. Saturday night in the double-elimination tournament.
