WC baseball heads to regional tournament

WC baseball heads to regional tournament
The Weatherford College baseball team begins the 2024 Region V Tournament with one goal—repeating the 2023 result of a regional championship and a World Series berth.

Unlike last year, when the event was held at WC's Roger Williams Ballpark, this year's tournament is in Waco, hosted by McLennan Community College at McClinton Field at Bosque River Ballpark. The double-elimination tournament runs from May 10 to May 14.

The top four teams from the Northern Texas Junior College Athletic Conference and the top four from the Western Junior College Athletic Conference will play in the double-elimination bracket with one World Series berth on the line.

The NTJCAC will send 1-seed Weatherford (43-13), 2-seed McLennan (39-17), 3-seed Grayson College (29-24) and 4-seed Cisco College (35-18).

WJCAC representatives include 1-seed Midland College (40-14), 2-seed New Mexico Junior College (38-16), 3-seed Howard College (21-15) and 4-seed New Mexico Military Institute (29-26).

Weatherford will open the tournament against New Mexico Military on Friday at 1 p.m.

The Coyotes are ranked No. 7 in the latest National Junior College Athletic Association Division I poll released Monday. WC is the only nationally-ranked team in the tournament.

Several teams in the tournament rank among the national top 10 in key statistics. Midland ranks second in the country in team batting average (.378), and New Mexico is fifth (.365). New Mexico has the second-most home runs in the nation (96) and Howard is tied for 10th (78).

Defensively, Cisco has given up the fewest home runs in the country (0). The Weatherford pitching staff has the fourth-lowest ERA (3.12) and has given up the ninth-fewest runs (198) and tenth-fewest hits (318).
