Coyotes look back on 2020 season

A season that began with promise hit a rough patch, and then disappeared completely for the Weatherford College Coyotes softball team.

The season, as it did for teams across America, came to a sudden end, thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic. At the time, the Coyotes, preseason favorites in the Northern Texas Junior College Athletic Conference, were struggling in league play, but looked to be pulling themselves together.

"The season abruptly ending was disappointing, but we kind of saw it coming the few days leading up to it," Coyotes head coach Haylee Williams said. "I hate that the sophomores that are not returning did not get to finish their last season here at WC, and we didn't have a chance to celebrate them, or for them to say goodbye.

"We understand and know it was for the best, but it still stung."

Among the brightest spots for the Coyotes this season was the hitting of sophomore Stephanie Jimenez. She tied for first in the conference in home runs with 10, had a batting average of .500, and a slugging percentage of 1.000.

The NJCAA granted an extra year of eligibility to spring athletes in light of the Coronavirus cancellation. No official announcement has been made on how many members of the Coyotes will return.

The Coyotes had a roster that featured 14 freshmen and eight sophomores this season.
