Lady Coyotes enter Region V Tournament

For the 25th time under Coach Bob McKinley, the Weatherford College Lady Coyote basketball team is heading to the postseason.

WC will play South Plains College at 1 p.m. on Thursday, March 5 in the opening game of the Region V Tournament in Moody Coliseum on the campus of Abilene Christian University.

Weatherford (22-8) is the fourth seed out of the Northern Texas Junior College Athletic Conference, averaging 73.3 points per game. Sophomore guard Destiny McAfee (5-foot-9, Longview H.S.) is WC's leading scorer at 16.2 points per game. Adela Valkova (6-2; Prague, Czech Republic) adds 8.7 points per game and a team-leading 6.8 rebounds.

South Plains (29-1) is ranked No. 3 in the nation according to the latest National Junior College Athletic Association Division I rankings and won the 2020 Western Junior College Athletic Conference title with 13 wins and 1 loss. The Lady Texans are averaging 80.8 points per game and shooting 50.7 percent from the field for the season. Sophomore Sarah Shematsi (6-2; Angers, France) leads SPC with 12.2 points per game. Ruth Koang (6-5, Rochester, New York) is adding 10 points and 7.1 rebounds.

The eight-team tournament will run through Saturday, March 7. The winner of the single-elimination, three-round bracket will earn an automatic berth in the NJCAA National Tournament.
