WC loses two close games, Lady Coyotes headed to regionals

In their regular season finales Wednesday night in Waco, the Weatherford College basketball teams lost two games by a combined five points. McLennan Community College won the women’s game 77-75 and the men’s game 79-76.

The Lady Coyotes had a 10-point lead at halftime, but MCC overtook WC in the fourth quarter for the comeback win. Weatherford’s Destiny McAfee scored 24 points and Adela Valkova scored 14 and pulled down 10 rebounds.

WC (22-8) finished tied for third place with Hill College in the women’s standings of the Northern Texas Junior College Athletic Conference with a 10-6 league record. Bob McKinley’s squad will enter the Region V Tournament as the fourth seed from the NTJCAC, to play the top seed from the Western Junior College Athletic Conference Thursday, March 5 at 1 p.m. at Abilene Christian University’s Moody Coliseum.

Weatherford’s first round opponent will be either South Plains College, ranked No. 3 in the latest national rankings, or No. 16 Odessa College. South Plains and Odessa play Thursday night, Feb. 27 in their final regular season game.

In the men’s game Wednesday night, WC lost despite shooting 51.9 percent from the field. Erik Talton led the Coyotes with 20 points and D’Michael Bellfield added 15 and 12 rebounds. Cameron Copeland led MCC with 22 points. The Coyotes finished the season at 15-15 overall and 3-11 in conference.
