Sickle Cell Testing
As effective August 1, 2022, the NCAA requires all student-athletes to provide confirmation of their sickle cell status. The NJCAA also recommends following all NCAA health, wellness, and safety recommendations/requirements. In order to comply with collegiate healthcare standards, Weatherford College is requiring that student‐athletes provide proof of a prior test or be tested for Sickle Cell. The purpose of testing is to identify student‐athletes presenting with Sickle Cell. Being aware of the trait and taking proper precautions can help the sports medicine staff react appropriately and effectively to provide the athlete with the best care if symptoms are presented
-
Sickle Cell is an inherited blood disorder that affects how red blood cells carry oxygen through the body during exercise due to an event called sickling.
-
An event can happen during the beginning of intense exercise which causes red blood cells to sickle and block blood vessels, denying oxygen to muscles and organs, which can lead to serious medical problems or even death.
-
There is no reason that athletes with sickle cell should not be allowed to compete. Sickle cell only becomes a threat in certain rare situations in which athletes push the limits of their physical conditioning.
