WC back in first place with sweep of Hill

Weatherford College baseball finished its fourth series sweep of the season on Saturday, beating Hill College twice in a doubleheader, 15-5 and 14-3.

The games were originally scheduled to be played in Hillsboro, but weather forced the doubleheader onto the Roger Williams Ballpark turf at WC.

With the series sweep, the Coyotes (40-12 overall, 22-6 conference) climbed back into first place in the Northern Texas Junior College Athletic Conference standings, tied with McLennan Community College heading into the final series of the regular season against MCC.

Dayton Tockey powered the WC offense in the first game Saturday, going 4-for-4 with a home run and three singles. The Weatherford High School product also drove in two runs, scored three times and walked once.

Evan Brandt earned the win, scattering seven hits over six innings with four runs, three walks and four strikeouts.

Game two saw Trace Mazon drive in five runs on three hits. The Aledo Bearcat hit a three-run home run in the first inning, doubled in the third and doubled in the fourth.

Cade Crossland struck out eight Hill batters, giving up just two hits, one earned run and two walks.

The conference championship will come down to the Weatherford/McLennan series. The two teams play on Wednesday in Waco and then on Saturday at WC. Both doubleheaders begin at 3 p.m.
