Season recap: Coyotes look back on up and down year

Season recap: Coyotes look back on up and down year

What began as a great season ended in a different fashion for the Weatherford College Coyote basketball team in 2019-20.

The Coyotes posted a 15-15 overall record that was a tale of two seasons. In their 16 non-conference games they were 12-4. However, in the Northern Texas Junior College Athletic Conference they were only 3-11.

The Coyotes began the season with a 10-3 record, including six consecutive victories. Through their first 20 games they stood 14-6.

Over their final 10 contests, however, they dropped nine, including their final six.

There is plenty of which to be optimistic about as the team begins offseason preparations for next season. Topping the list is freshman D'Michael Bellfield, who was named all-conference after leading the league in field goal percentage (63.5) and ranking fifth in rebounds per game (7.4), with a scoring average of 14.4.

Freshman Matthew Wages was named honorable mention all-conference, as were sophomores Erik Talton and Jared Simmons. Wages was second in the conference in 3-point field goal percentage (44.7), and Simmons was third (41.7).

In all, the Coyotes' roster featured 13 freshmen and four sophomores in 2019-20.
