WC basketball begins conference play Saturday

For the first time, Weatherford College is hosting the Region V basketball tournament this March. In order to play in the tournament, each team must finish in the top four of their respective conferences to enjoy that home court advantage in the postseason.

That process begins Saturday afternoon as conference play opens for WC, facing McLennan Community College at 2 p.m. (women's game) and 4 p.m. (men).

The WC men's team is 11-4 overall, having won eight of its last nine games going back to Nov 24.

The Coyotes are averaging 78.4 points per game with a 47.2 percent field goal average as a team.

McLennan's men will come to the Graber Center with a 14-3 record and a 56.6 shooting percentage, second-highest in the nation.

Sophomore guard Jared Washington leads the Coyotes in scoring with 22 points per game. He also averages 6.3 rebounds.

On the women's side, the Lady Coyotes are 5-8 overall, averaging 66 points per game.

Freshman Selina Gutierrez is averaging a team-best 16.5 points on 70.2 percent shooting. Janavia Gage is the WC rebounds leader with 12.4 per game.

The McLennan women are 12-3 overall and ranked No. 5 in the country.
