Coyotes mount comeback to upset Collin

The Weatherford College men's basketball team overcame a 19-point deficit to upset Collin College at the Graber Athletic Center on Saturday, 72-65.

Collin leads the Northern Texas Junior College Athletic Conference standings with a 7-3 league record, 20-6 overall. With the win, the Coyotes are now a half-game behind the Cougars at 6-3 in conference, 18-7 overall.

WC found itself down 25-6 in the early going but cut Collin's lead to four points by halftime. Weatherford took its first lead with 3:29 to go in the game and a clutch steal/basket/free throw sequence in the closing seconds by Melvin Quennecart allowed the Coyotes to hold on to the win.

Jamie Hodges led WC with 14 points followed by Quennecart and Donato Joseph with 12 each and Wayne Wiggins with 11.

In the women's game, the No. 3 ranked Lady Cougars beat a short-handed WC team 109-59. Collin's Alisha Nunley scored 38 points.

WC only suited up seven players due to injury and illness. Weatherford's Deja Lumsden turned in 17 points and Janavia Gage had a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds.

Grayson College comes to the Graber Center on Wednesday, Feb. 21. The women's game will tip-off at 5 p.m. and the men at 7 p.m.
