Espenson wins team roping title in Odessa

Eighteen members of the Weatherford College rodeo team qualified for the Saturday night top 10 finals at the Odessa College Rodeo this past weekend in the Ector County Coliseum including half of the team's field in barrel racing, four tie down ropers and all four roughstock riders.  

Freshman Tyler Espenson and partner Jayde Smith (Clarendon College) won the team roping title. It was Espenson's first ever college rodeo, as he sat out the fall semester due to injury. The duo won third in both rounds with runs of 5.5 and 5.4 to claim the Odessa buckles.  

Colton Greene and his partner Zack Stone (Howard College) placed fourth in the final round with a 6.1 run and finished fourth overall with 12.4 on two head. Greene also placed eighth in the steer wrestling event.  

In tiedown roping, Cash Fretwell placed in both rounds with runs of 9.1 and 10.8 to finish up third overall. Cash Enderli won the opening round with a run of 8.6 and finished fifth overall with 20.7 on two. Zaine Mikita and Trent Sorey finished ninth and 10th respectively.  

Bubba Holcomb continued his winning ways in bareback riding with scores of 74 and 75 in both rounds and finished up tied for third on the weekend, moving him up to third in the Southwest Region standings. Jayce Harrsion tied for first in the finals with a score of 77 and finished fifth overall, while Brayden Tyrer placed ninth overall.  

In bull riding, freshman Kacy Jones made his first short go of the season placing eighth with a score of 72.  

Bradi Good placed in both rounds with runs of 14.55 and 14.70 to win third place in barrel racing. Kenzie Cook came from 10th to fifth overall after placing fourth in the finals with a run of 14.77. Kendall Kennedy won eighth. Sophie Dunn placed fifth in the opening round with a 14.49, but finished up ninth overall while Reagan Laney placed 10th.  

Kristen Reaves holds her No. 2 position in the Southwest Region goat tying standings after placing fifth in the opening round, but ended up 10th overall.  

Brie Wells holds her top spot for the WC women's team after placing in both rounds and finishing sixth overall in breakaway roping.  

Next up for WC Rodeo is the Ranger/Cisco College Rodeo in Sweetwater March 24-26.
