WC tennis team succeeds in debut

The Weatherford College women's tennis team is back, and by all accounts, ahead of schedule.

The team performed well against university competition Friday and Saturday at the Oklahoma City Collegiate Invitational, with several singles and doubles wins over NCAA Division II programs Ouachita Baptist University and Southeastern Oklahoma State University.

"Our first fall tournament was not only great from a results standpoint but from a team standpoint," said Alexandra Leatu, WC head tennis coach. "There was so much growth from each player because they finally had the opportunity to compete and show out for each other. This was great preparation for fall regionals in Tyler this upcoming weekend. I'm so proud of how this team represented Weatherford College."

WC's Agathe Vaillant (France) and Maria Ristanovic (Serbia) were No. 3 doubles flight champions, defeating a team from SOSU 6-3.

Anastasiia Khrustaleva, WC's No.1 singles player, advanced to the singles flight finals, eventually losing to Skye Royall of SOSU in three sets in the final. Khrustaleva is a native of Russia and a transfer from Troy University in Alabama.

Vaillant, No. 3 in singles, also advanced to the finals of her singles flight.

Khrustaleva, Ristanovic, Vaillant and Maddie Farmer (Aledo) all won matches during the two-day event.

The Coyotes travel to Tyler this weekend for the NJCAA Region 5 Fall Regionals.
