WC tennis beats UMHB, loses to UIW

The Weatherford College women's tennis team competed against a pair of four-year university programs on a road trip to Belton and San Antonio Feb. 19 and 20. Weatherford defeated the University of Mary Hardin Baylor and lost to the University of the Incarnate Word.

"This was a great weekend for the team to gain some confidence and compete hard," said Alexandra Leatu, WC head coach. "They're digging deep at this point in the season and finding a rhythm as a unit and what it means to compete together.

On Saturday, the Coyotes defeated UMHB in Belton, winning the match 9-0 without dropping a set and only losing 12 games across the board.

Anastasiia Khrustaleva won the No. 1 singles 6-0, 6-2 while winning doubles 8-3 with partner Michelle Markovic.

Markovic, Mia Milojevic, Marija Ristanovic, Agathe Vaillant and Elena Baughman Saunders also made quick work of their opponents in singles play.

On Sunday, the team traveled to San Antonio to face NCAA Division I opponent Incarnate Word. UIW won the match 6-1.

Markovic had the lone win for the Coyotes in San Antonio in three sets.

"As a new team with so many young players, patience and resilience is what it will take to find more success throughout the season," Leatu said.

The team will face Meridian Community College Saturday, Feb. 26, at Collin College in Plano.
