WC softball wins 3 of 4 vs. Vernon

The Weatherford College softball team took three out of four against Vernon College in a four-game series on Wednesday and Monday.

On Wednesday in Vernon, the Chaparrals took the first game 6-5. WC scored three runs in the top of the sixth inning in a comeback attempt that fell short. Alexah Reyes went 2-for-3 with a double, and Lindsey Oliver struck out six while giving up one earned run and three hits over three innings.

Game two went to the Coyotes, 14-1. Lilly Bean drove in five runs on three hits, including a two-run home run to right field in the first inning. Jillian Franco had three RBI and a double. Oliver earned the win in the pitcher's circle with two hits, no runs, one walk and five strikeouts over four innings. The game ended in the sixth inning due to the mercy rule after a six-run WC frame.

Saturday's doubleheader was rescheduled to Monday at Stuart Field due to rain. WC took the first game 9-1 after jumping out to a 7-0 lead by the bottom of the second. Sadie Reed was 2-for-4 with two RBI, and Texas Ray had a three-RBI game, going 2-for-3. Oliver picked up another win, allowing three hits, one run and no walks while striking out five over five innings.

The fourth and final game of the series went to Weatherford, 12-4. After falling behind 4-0 in the top of the second, WC scored four runs in the home half of the second and blew the game open with a seven-run fifth, ending the game early. Alexah Reyes had two triples and three RBI. Caydin Blackmon went the full five innings, allowing nine hits but just one earned run and one walk while striking out two.

WC improved to 15-11 overall and 3-5 in conference play.

The Coyotes begin a new four-game series against North Central Texas College with a doubleheader in Gainesville on Wednesday, followed by a doubleheader at Stuart Field at noon on Saturday.
