Lady Coyotes lose to No. 7 NMJC at regionals

The Weatherford College women's basketball team played New Mexico Junior College in the 2022 Region V Women's Basketball Tournament Wednesday night at Frenship High School in Lubbock. The Lady Thunderbirds, ranked No. 7 in the nation, took the win 79-75, ending WC's season.

WC was the fourth seed from Region V-North. New Mexico was the top seed from Region V-West and had been ranked as high as third in the nation this season.

The two teams had their offense rolling in the first two quarters. WC built a slight lead and went into halftime ahead of the Lady T-Birds, 36-33, thanks to a buzzer-beater, half-court shot from Briarley Rogers.

The Lady Coyotes battled throughout the second half, but a run in the third quarter by New Mexico cost them the game. WC outscored NMJC in the fourth quarter 26-23, but still came up short by four points.

Shomyra Francis was 3-for-4 from the three-point line and was the top scorer for WC with 18 points. Adela Valkova was right behind Francis, adding 16 points. Celise Bobbitt also scored in double digits, bringing in 10 points for Weatherford.

Precious Cowen led NMJC with 20 points.

The Lady Coyotes ended the season with a 15-11 overall record.
